Can you get a bank bonus if you already have an account there?

It depends on how the bank writes its rule, and there isn't one standard. Some banks disqualify you for simply having had an account there recently, whatever happened with it. Others only care whether you were actually paid a bonus recently. A few stack both rules at once. Always read the specific offer's eligibility terms rather than assuming.

Updated September 2026

"New customers only" sounds like one rule, but banks build it three different ways, and which version applies changes whether your old account at a bank rules you out of its current bonus. We read the live eligibility terms for three banks on September 22, 2026 to show the real patterns, because guessing wrong here means opening an account for nothing.

The first pattern checks whether you had an account, regardless of whether you were ever paid a bonus for it. Regions Bank writes its current $400 LifeGreen Checking offer this way: "Persons who had a personal Regions checking account within one year prior to new account opening are ineligible for this offer." Notice what this does not ask. It does not ask whether that old Regions account ever earned you a dime. A checking account you opened three years ago for a routine reason, never touched a bonus, and closed 13 months ago clears you. Closed it 11 months ago and you are locked out until the year is up, bonus history or not.

The second pattern checks the opposite thing: not whether you had an account, but whether you were paid. Wells Fargo's current Everyday Checking offer is worded around the bonus itself: you are "not eligible if you have received a bonus for opening a Wells Fargo consumer checking account within the past 12 months." Read literally, a Wells Fargo customer who has kept a checking account open for years without ever claiming a sign-up bonus is not excluded by this clause, because the clock only starts on an actual payout. This is a meaningfully different bar from Regions' account-based rule, even though both windows happen to run 12 months.

The third pattern stacks two separate clocks instead of picking one. PNC's current Virtual Wallet bonus terms read: "You will not be eligible for the offer if you or any signer on the new account has an existing PNC Bank consumer checking account or have closed an account within the past 12 months, or if you have been a primary signer on a consumer checking account that has received a PNC promotional premium in the past 24 months." That is an account-based 12-month window layered on top of a separate, longer 24-month bonus-based window, and either one alone disqualifies you. A former PNC customer who closed an account 13 months ago clears the first clause, but if that same person collected a PNC checking bonus 18 months ago, the second clause still blocks the new offer for another 6 months.

The practical takeaway is not to memorize these three banks. It is that "existing customer" language on a bank bonus page is never boilerplate, and the difference between an account-based window and a bonus-based window can be the entire gap between eligible and excluded on the same calendar day. Before you apply anywhere you have banked before, find that bank's own current offer terms (usually a numbered disclosure or footnote near the bottom of the promo page, not the headline copy) and read exactly what triggers the exclusion: an account, a payout, or both. Doctor of Credit and bank-bonus communities often summarize this correctly, but a summary written for a past version of the offer can miss a term that changed, so the bank's own live terms are the one source worth trusting for a decision that determines whether your application is worth submitting at all.

This is a different question from rechurning, which is about earning the same bank's bonus again after enough time passes. What this page covers is the moment before that: whether your existing (or recently closed) relationship with a bank blocks you from its CURRENT offer in the first place. It is also different from stacking bonuses across banks at the same time, which has no existing-customer complication at all since a different bank has never seen you before.

To check the three offers quoted above, start with the Regions LifeGreen Checking bonus, the Wells Fargo Everyday Checking bonus, and the PNC Virtual Wallet bonus pages, then browse the full bonus list for everything else. Each of those banks also has its own direct deposit rules, so read what counts as direct deposit at PNC Bank and what counts as direct deposit at Wells Fargo before you open. And if every bank you have used before is still inside its window, a new bank is the simpler path: you can earn multiple bank bonuses at the same time at banks that have never seen you.
