What is a high-yield savings account (HYSA)?
A savings account that pays a significantly higher interest rate than a standard savings account.
A high-yield savings account works exactly like a regular savings account. Your money is FDIC insured, you can deposit and withdraw freely, and there's nothing complicated about how it works. The only real difference is the interest rate. Traditional brick-and-mortar banks often pay something like 0.01% APY. Online banks offering HYSAs regularly pay 4% or more.
For bonus purposes, HYSAs are interesting because they sometimes come with their own sign-up bonuses on top of the interest rate. You earn the bonus, collect the higher interest while you hold the required balance, and then decide whether to stick around or move on.
One thing worth knowing: HYSA rates are variable. They tend to track the federal funds rate, so when the Fed cuts rates, HYSA rates usually follow within a few months. The sign-up bonus is yours once you meet the requirements. The interest rate is not guaranteed.
