What Counts as a Direct Deposit for SoFi Bonuses?

SoFi counts employer payroll, government benefits, and ACH pushes from select fintechs as qualifying direct deposits. Based on 374 community data points, employer payroll, Chase Business payroll, and Current pushes are the most reliable routes. P2P transfers and external bank ACH pulls do not count.

What SoFi Officially Requires

From SoFi's offer terms: "Receive direct deposits totaling $5,000 or more (for the $400 bonus) or $1,000 or more (for the $50 bonus). After your first Eligible Direct Deposit posts, SoFi totals Eligible Direct Deposits received over the next 25 calendar days. P2P transfers and external ACH transfers are not eligible." SoFi defines a qualifying direct deposit as one from an employer, payroll provider, or government benefits program. In practice, the 374 community data points on this page show several routes work reliably. Employer payroll is nearly flawless at 76 of 77 conclusive reports. Chase Business payroll ACH has worked in all 21 conclusive reports, and Current pushes are 14 for 14 with reports as recent as July 2026. Wise pushes have worked in 10 of 11. One warning on a route you may see recommended in older threads: Kraken withdrawals worked in 14 reports from December 2025 through mid-May 2026, then two back-to-back late-June 2026 reports confirm they stopped coding as direct deposits. Treat Kraken as dead until new reports say otherwise.

What Does NOT Count at SoFi

Zelle transfers. Coded as peer-to-peer, not a direct deposit.
Venmo, Cash App, or any P2P service. SoFi explicitly excludes P2P transfers in their terms, and a May 2026 Venmo report confirms it in practice.
External bank ACH pulls. Pulling money into SoFi from your old bank does not qualify.
Kraken withdrawals since late June 2026. After 14 successes from December 2025 through mid-May 2026, two late-June 2026 reports confirm they now code as ordinary deposits, not direct deposits.
Fidelity CMA pushes. Failed in 5 of 5 conclusive community reports, the latest in June 2026.
Schwab brokerage pushes. Failed in 3 of 3 conclusive reports, the latest in June 2026.
Robinhood pushes. Failed in 3 of 3 conclusive reports between March and May 2026, both brokerage and bank.
Ally pushes. Every conclusive report since 2024 has failed (4 straight, most recently May 2026).
Tax refunds and standard government deposits. Only government benefits (Social Security, disability) qualify, not tax refunds. A March 2026 report confirms tax refunds do not count.

How to Verify Your Deposit Counted

SoFi labels qualifying deposits as "Direct Deposit" in the transaction history. Non-qualifying ACH transfers show up as "Deposit" or "ACH Transfer" without the Direct Deposit label. The 25-day window starts when the first qualifying deposit posts, not when the account opens. You can track your progress inside the SoFi app under the bonus offer details. SoFi is typically fast on payout once the window closes, often within one business day of completing the requirement. If you opened your SoFi account through a cashback portal, see the SoFi via Swagbucks bonus page for portal-specific notes.
