What Counts as a Direct Deposit for Chase Bonuses?

Chase is one of the stricter banks in our dataset. Based on 758 community data points, employer payroll, Chase Business payroll, Treasury Direct, and Fidelity pushes sent with the "transfer to someone else" option reliably trigger the Chase Total Checking bonus, while Wells Fargo and Schwab pushes mostly fail.

What Chase Officially Requires

Chase requires "qualifying electronic deposits" totaling $1,000 or more within 90 days of coupon enrollment. Their terms specify payroll, pension, Social Security, or other regular monthly income. Chase is stricter than most banks about what counts, and the 758 community-reported data points on this page back that up. A few methods are reliable in practice. Employer payroll is flawless at 186 of 186 conclusive reports. Chase Business payroll (8 of 8), Treasury Direct (7 of 7), Elements Financial (6 of 6), Cash App balance withdrawals (5 of 5, most recently July 2026), and Fidelity Cash Management pushes set up with the "transfer to someone else" option (9 of 9 conclusive, most recently August 2026) have all consistently coded as qualifying direct deposits. Watch out for one trap: standard Fidelity pushes in your own name are inconsistent at Chase, splitting 9 worked and 7 failed. Two reports from January and February 2026 failed, but the two most recent conclusive reports, from June and July 2026, both worked. There's no clean recent trend either way, so treat it as a coin flip rather than a reliable route. The someone-else transfer setup avoids the inconsistency entirely.

What Does NOT Count at Chase

Zelle payments. Coded as peer-to-peer, not direct deposit.
Venmo transfers. Also coded as P2P in most cases.
Wells Fargo pushes. 10 of 12 conclusive community reports failed, including December 2025 and March 2026 reports that Chase caught on to this route.
Schwab pushes (checking or brokerage). 8 of 10 conclusive reports failed, and the last success was in 2023. Multiple March 2026 reports confirm Chase no longer counts them.
Langley FCU transfers. A July 2026 report coded as P2P and did not trigger the bonus.
Standard ACH pulls. Pulling money from another bank into Chase does not code as a direct deposit.
Internal Chase transfers. Moving money between your own Chase accounts won't trigger the bonus.

How to Verify Your Deposit Counted

After your deposit posts, check your Chase account activity. Qualifying deposits typically show a category label of "Direct Deposits" or similar in the transaction details. You can also track your coupon status in the Chase mobile app or online banking under "My Offers." The tracker will update to show your progress toward the deposit requirement. If you see "Great job! Your bonus will be deposited within 15 days," you're confirmed. Bank-bonus communities and Doctor of Credit also maintain lists of what has worked recently. Always check recent data points before relying on a specific method. For comparison, Chase is one of the stricter banks. See what counts as direct deposit at Wells Fargo for a bank with similar official terms but looser ACH acceptance in practice, or what counts as direct deposit at SoFi for the most flexible alternative DD requirements.
